The Hippostemus is a hip implant designed to assist our patient, Dianne Chambers, in her daily life. During her early days, Ms. Chambers used to be very athletic and was part of many school sports. In present day, she is 56 years old and inactive. Recently she has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis which causes inflammation and severe pain in her joints even while performing simple motion such as walking. As a result, doctors prescribed her daily doses of Prednisone, a type of drug that helps her in dealing with the pain. Since Prednisone is a corticosteroid, it caused her to lose bone density at a dramatic rate. Moreover, Ms. Chambers has already hit her menopause, so there are not enough estrogen produced to protect her bones from Prednisone overdose. All these factors led her to develop osteoporosis. Therefore, together as a team, we have designed Hippostemus, a custom hip implant for patients with osteoporosis that emphasizes bone growth and integration.
